I often offer news and views based on research, study, and analysis bolstered by my own experience. As some perverted reward for my efforts, I sometimes receive frenetic responses from some people. My friend Milind asked me a profound question, "Why is it that people cannot see the truth?"
Everyone seems to claim a monopoly over the 'Truth.
Unfortunately, everyone's truth is different based on their source of their information, education, experience and conditioning, and driven by individual's fear and greed.
Entire societies, races, communities even nations arrive at some common way of thinking (truth) which is called 'group think', I prefer to describe it as 'herd think'. It matters little to herd members, what is right or wrong or what is the truth. Since they have no need to seek the truth, the truth is handed out to them by others. All they know instinctively, is that they must stick together with other herd members. The herd tends to be homogenous in thought and action because it offers herd members security and a sense of belonging.
This is why anyone who dares to question the status quo or even suggest a change will be along with their family members be persecuted, tortured and even killed. Herd members are not even permitted to think for themselves, all they know is non conformists threaten their security.
If we want to understand what is really going on and what really is the truth, ignore the herd members pay close attention to who is tending the herd, the herder. Those entities in today's world who shape our narrative and keep and drive together the herd are the media, entertainment industry, politicians and social leaders, educational institutions and government bureaucracy. In a sense they are the pied pipers of every society and nation.
If they are lucky a people will get good herders, if not they will be led to certain pain, even destruction.
How else can one explain the lemming like approach of people across the system unwilling to accept anything but the 'truth' that has been manufactured for and dished out to them?
So toxic and wooden headed the herd become that they will resort to boycotts and many forms of abuse and violence against the non conformist. The more a society drifts from the truth the less tolerant they are of those who speak it. This stage in the life of an organisation, society, country, religion or ideology spells the beginning of the rapid decline of that entity.
Many of us are at sometime pricked by our conscience of being truthful in thought and deed, and that is certain to destroy us. If we act as per our conscience we will be swiftly destroyed by the mobs and if we ignore our conscience we will torture ourselves and die bit by bit each day.
That is a dilemma we all face about the Truth.
I am reminded of the Christian reformist priest Martin Luther (1483 - 1546). For his writings which challenged the pope and the Church Martin Luther was dragged before the Diet (Assembly) in 1521 consisting of of powerful clergy and politicians. They commanded him a highly respected man and priest to repudiate his writings.
The official transcript quotes him as saying, “Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason, I do not accept the authority of popes and councils because they often contradict themselves and each other, my conscience is captive to the word of God. I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. So help me God. Amen.”
Fortunately, he was protected and saved by courageous people to continue his protestations and eventually reform the Church.
