Master the Storm

ree

With wind speeds sometimes reaching 200 km/hr, cyclones frequently lash India's coast. They always leave a trail of destruction in their path of fury.

Storms are unstoppable. When storms come, we can only brace ourselves.

Understanding the nature of storms and anticipating events, we prepare ourselves to cope well.

For our lack of understanding of nature and events, and lack of preparation, we will have to pay a heavy price.

Come to think of it, our lives are just like these cyclones; We too can prepare and condition ourselves materially and mentally to escape the fury and remain unruffled by the storm that will inevitably come.

Permit me to explain,

If one looks at a cyclone, the centre or what we call the 'eye of the storm', is strangely calm and quiet. Our being is just like that.

Right at the very centre of our lives is 'I', me, myself, all alone, calm and in bliss. External to that 'I', is all the turmoil that has originated from outside of me.

Family, friends, enemies, associates, strangers, etc., anyone or anything can initiate storms for us. If we keep ourselves at the centre of the storm, we can remain composed, peaceful and safe, which provides us the time and space to perceive and the ability to respond. If we move outwards towards the turmoil-filled periphery, we could easily be inundated and swept away.

To survive and thrive, it is essential to have faith in oneself and in Creation. If we do, we will be alright. Let the great power sleeping within us awaken, take and keep us at the centre, where we remain unaffected by the storm manufactured usually by our own perception.

I myself, having gone through extremely difficult times, can speak with confidence and authority. I look back and laugh at the uselessness of my worry, having learnt that nothing is permanent. Every storm will pass, even a violent one.

If we do anything, go anywhere, think anything, we are bound to venture out; we are bound to encounter storms. Some storms are real, and most are imaginary.

A mind without a steady point, as is the centre of the storm, risks being overwhelmed and swept away. Those who fight nature always lose; those who respect and flow with nature flow towards the centre.

Our lives are nothing more than energy at play. This energy is within and without us. Over what is outside, we have no control, but what lies within us is the same universe over which we can claim and have mastery.

All successful and happy individuals have been able to draw upon the powers of the Universe, not from the outside but from within. The same spiritual and intellectual energy that lies at our centre within us.

Remember, the one who draws on the energy of the outside is a slave, the one who draws the energy from within is a master.
